Ivanhoe Northeast, a neighborhood in Kansas City, Missouri, exhibits a Low Diversity demographic profile with a Black Majority. As of 2022, 90% of the population identifies as Black, with a median income of $37,893. The neighborhood has experienced significant economic growth over the past decade, although it remains below the national median income. Ivanhoe Northeast has historical significance as one of the first predominantly Black neighborhoods in Kansas City, dating back to the early 20th century.
Throughout the analyzed period (2013-2022), Ivanhoe Northeast has consistently maintained its status as a Black Majority community. The percentage of Black residents has fluctuated slightly but remained high, ranging from 84% to 97%. There was a brief period (2015-2017) where the neighborhood showed signs of moving towards Moderate Diversity, with Hispanic representation reaching 10-13%. However, this trend reversed in recent years, solidifying the area's Low Diversity categorization.
The White population has shown variability, reaching a high of 7% in 2018 and 2022, but generally remaining a small minority. Other racial groups, including Asian, Native American, and Pacific Islander, have consistently shown negligible representation.
The neighborhood has experienced substantial economic growth over the past decade. The median income more than doubled from $15,205 in 2013 to $37,893 in 2022. This growth correlates with some demographic shifts. The period of increased Hispanic representation (2015-2017) coincided with a sharp increase in median income, rising from $20,733 to $35,464. The highest median income ($38,926 in 2018) corresponded with a slight increase in White residents (7%) and a decrease in Hispanic residents (5%). Despite some fluctuations, the overall trend of increasing Black majority (from 91% in 2013 to 97% in 2020) has been accompanied by a general upward trend in median income.
Population figures have shown variability, dropping from 1,152 in 2010 to a low of 703 in 2019, before rebounding to 1,005 in 2022. This recent population growth coincides with continued income improvements, suggesting a possible revitalization of the neighborhood.
Ivanhoe Northeast's median income remains below the national median (which was approximately $70,784 in 2021). The neighborhood's demographic composition, with its strong Black majority, is atypical compared to national averages, where Black residents comprise about 13.4% of the population. The economic growth in Ivanhoe Northeast is noteworthy given the challenges many predominantly Black urban neighborhoods face nationwide. This growth could be indicative of targeted urban renewal efforts or changing dynamics in the broader Kansas City area.
The neighborhood's resistance to significant demographic change, despite economic improvements, suggests strong community ties and cultural identity. This stability in racial composition, coupled with economic growth, presents a case study in community development and the interplay between racial demographics and economic factors in urban neighborhoods.
